FOSSIL FORMATIONS OF THE CAROLINA COASTAL PLAINS
|
| ********** |

What fossils are you walking over each time you cut the grass or walk through your city park?
Where can you go to find megalodon teeth?
Are you wasting your time looking for Isurus preacursor in a particular region?
Are we running out of fossil shark teeth?
If you live in (or can travel to) one of the Coastal Plains counties of North or South Carolina, now you can find out!
As most of you know, we at MegMawL collect many of the fossils that we offer for sale on our WebSite. For years we have researched the physical locations and available data in an effort to find the best places to find a particular fossil. A good bit of written data is available, but scattered in 85 to 90 publications and presentations. The information presented here started out about 25 years ago as written entries in a notebook. It evolved over the years into a database on our computer. We have translated this accumulated knowledge into a Chart, a Table, an Explanation and a Sites page that you can easily use to understand the geology and biostratigraphy of these regions - if you are one of a very special group of people.
There are many advantages in being a Premier MegMawL Customer. If you are one of these wonderful people, contact us and we will be glad to email you a copy of the Chart (at the top of this page) and the Table (at the end of this page). The Enlarged Chart will be similar to the one above but it will be a larger size that you can actually read. In addition, the Enlarged Chart will have noted on it 59 of our FAVORITE COLLECTING SITES. Accompanying the Enlarged Chart will be a descriptive, annotated, Sites File with directions to the 59 sites and formations found there. The Sites File will be similar to the one found here: EXAMPLES OF CAROLINA FOSSIL COLLECTING SITES
but will be complete.
The Formations Table will contain all the names of the 50 formations instead of -----, like the one at the bottom of this page.
Aren't you glad you're a Premier MegMawL Customer?!!
Why do the formations in the Chart above appear so JUMBLED? For an explanation see:
EXPLANATION OF FOSSIL FORMATIONS OF THE CAROLINA COASTAL PLAINS
and:
REFORMULATED FOSSIL FORMATIONS
Table 1 below lists most of the fossil formations that have been cataloged in North and South Carolina. They are in chronological order with the youngest at the top. The formations that they overlie and underlie are specific to known areas and not the case in all locations. Many of these formations are also shown in the chart at the top of this page.
For definitions of the terms used in the first line of Table 1, please click on the underlined word to go to our "Definitions" WebPage. Then click the "Back" button on your browser to return here.
NC/SC: Denotes in which state the FORMATION is found.
