| CMX-9662 - The little "root nibs" at the bottom, outside edge of
the root lobes and general tooth shape tell us that this tooth is from one of
the last of the megalodons before extinction. This
animal lived during the Pliocene (2 to 5 MYA). The
serrations were "evolving out" and were not very
pronounced during the last few million years of this
animal's existence. They are worn in spots
from 40% to 60%. (See 10X Microscope Edge View.)
The tip is very clean and only slightly rounded which
is very unusual for this size tooth. The bourrelet is
99% complete which is also very rare for the size.
There is a small right hand, display side root crack
that does not go through the tooth and is completely stable. |
