Striatolamia Shark Teeth

Extinct Sandtiger Shark

Striatolamia macrota

from Ouled Abdoun Basin;
Oued Zem, near Kouribgha, Morocco

This animal was an ancester of modern day Sand Sharks and lived during the Eocene Epoch (34 to 55 MYA).  The teeth are sometimes confused with other genera like Scapanorhynchus, Odontaspis and Carcharias.  The symmetrical teeth are anteriors from the front of the mouth; the curved ones are from positions more toward the sides of the jaw.  No laterals are shown in the photo.  These teeth range in size from 1 3/8" to 1 1/8".
